Two-thirds of Erie County gyms at risk of shutting down

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WBEN) – Approximately two-thirds of gyms and fitness centers in Erie County risk being shut down despite opening up on Monday.

There are more than 600 gyms and fitness centers in Erie County, though Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz and Health Commissioner Gale Burstein said Wednesday that fewer than 200 have affirmed their safety guidance and requested an inspection by the Erie County Department of Health.

Poloncarz issued a stern warning to these gyms: Follow the rules or you’ll be shut down.

“I said last week when we announced this that you have to have a safety plan in place,” he said. “You have to affirm with New York State that you have this safety plan. You have to file that with New York State. You must request and pass an inspection from the Erie County Department of Health to remain open. Only those who did that were authorized to open on Monday.”
