Husband Dies After Refusing Treatment Upon Hearing His Wife Passed Away from Coronavirus

April 30, 2020

A couple married for over 63 years died on the same day from coronavirus.

Bill Dartnall, 90, died just hours after his wife Mary Dartnall, 81, succumbed to the virus at a British hospital on April 12th, according to the Daily Mail.

Upon hearing of Mary’s passing, Bill refused any further oxygen treatment and removed his mask.

“When he was told that Mum had passed away he tried to pull the mask off his face and made it clear he didn't want any more oxygen,” the couple’s daughter Rosemary told the outlet. “He continued to be cared for and passed away peacefully in his sleep a few hours later.”

Mary fell ill first and was rushed to the hospital, where she tested positive for COVID-19.

A few days later, Bill suffered a stroke and was admitted into the same hospital. He too received a positive diagnosis for coronavirus.

After initially showing an improvement, Mary’s prognosis took a turn for the worse. She passed away a few days later on Easter Sunday.

Rosemary believes the pain of her death was too much for her father to bear.

“Dad probably wouldn't have wanted to live without Mum,” she said. “They were very much a pair and it's hard to imagine either of them without the other.”

The family plans to hold a memorial service for both BIll and Mary once stay-at-home orders are lifted.
