Experts Warn Relaxed Restrictions Will Impact Coronavirus Death Toll

Experts warn that relaxed coronavirus restrictions across the United States will impact the virus' death toll.

According to a model from the University of Washington's Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation, the U.S. could see 134,475 deaths by early August, CNN reports. That number is double the model's prediction of 74,000 deaths from last weeks.

Dr. Christopher Murray, the institute's director, claims the reason these numbers are increasing is due to restrictions being lifted.

For the past two weeks, governors across the country introduced plans for reopening its states. Dr. Anthony Fauci, the country's leading infectious disease expert, said easing restrictions may cause more devastation to the country.

"How many deaths and how much suffering are you willing to accept to get back to what you want to be some form of normality, sooner rather than later?" Fauci said.

At least 42 states have eased restrictions through a number of methods from opening parks to allowing businesses to restart.

Johns Hopkins University provided data surrounding the spread of the coronavirus, which then was turned into an interactive map. The map shows the spread of the virus since late January, and how time has affected the global outbreak.

As of May 4, the country has over 1 million cases and 68,922 deaths.

Much of the planet is at a standstill due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and with shuttered businesses, overwhelmed hospitals, and millions of families mourning the loss of loved ones due to the coronavirus, the thread of hope that humanity is clinging to is the promise of a vaccine that will let us go back to normal.

If a vaccine for COVID-19 isn't possible, testing and contact tracing will become a regular part of life, and municipalities would have to develop lockdown protocols that would allow them to quickly enact stay-at-home orders if there was a spike of cases in their communities.
